Black History Month was not always what we know it to be today. It took the hard work of many, and the bright idea of few to create the celebration that is Black History Month. Before Black History Month existed, the celebration of African Americans was known as “Negro History Week”, sponsored in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a Harvard-trained historian, and Jesse E. Mooreland, a prominent minister with the backing of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). Woodson and Mooreland founded the ASNLH, known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), an organization created specifically for researching and promoting the achievements of Black Americans. “Negro History Week” was celebrated the second week of February to be in alignment with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. From 1926 until the 1960s, “Negro History Week” started to gain momentum and was recognized in cities and towns across America. In 1960 “Negro History Week” evolved into Black History Month on some college campuses.
In 1976 President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month and urged the people to celebrate the “too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history”. From that day forward, Black History Month has been recognized as a national time of celebration to acknowledge the Black Americans that have contributed to the advancement of society and continue to contribute so much every day. Every year there is a specific theme announced for Black History Month. In 2022, the theme was “Black Health and Wellness” created to explore “the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.”
Though Black History Month is celebrated in February, it is important to celebrate, uplift, and support African Americans all year long. Here are some easy ways to do so:

Forgetting items from the grocery list, where you left your phone or car keys, or names of acquaintances can be a normal problem. Everyone forgets things occasionally. Below are a few brain exercises and activities to keep our mind and memory strong:
1. Stay physically and mentally active
Physical activity increases blood flow to your whole body, including your brain, which may help keep your memory sharp. Mentally stimulating activities can also help keep your brain in shape — and might keep memory loss at bay:
2. Socialize
Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, both of which can contribute to memory loss. Look for opportunities to get together with loved ones, friends, and others, especially if you live alone.
3. Get organized
We are more likely to forget things if our spaces are cluttered and our notes are everywhere. Try to jot down tasks, appointments and other events in a notebook or a calendar. It may even help to repeat each entry out loud as you jot it down to help cement it in your memory. Keep to-do lists current and check off items you've completed. Set aside a place for your wallet, keys, glasses, and other essentials. Limit distractions and don't do too many things at once. If you focus on the information that you're trying to retain, you're more likely to recall it later.
4. Sleep well
Sleep plays an important role in helping consolidate your memories, so you can recall them down the road. Check the previous issue of our newsletter for tips on sleeping well: https://chfc.ck.page/posts/community-health-newsletter-winter-issue-2021-2022
5. Eat a healthy diet
It’s always better to eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Choose low-fat protein sources such as fish, beans, and nuts. Avoid sugar, processed food, fried food, or other fats. Use of alcohol and drugs can also lead to confusion and memory loss.
6. Manage chronic conditions
The better you take care of yourself, the better your memory is likely to be. In addition, review your medications with your doctor regularly. Various medications can affect memory.
7. Meditate
Various studies show that meditation helps improve focus, concentration, memory, and learning. Meditation may actually rewire the brain and encourage more connections between brain cells. Even getting out and enjoying the outdoors can be a form of meditation.
It is important to know when to seek help for memory loss. If you're worried that the decline of your memory has become quite serious, especially if it is affecting your ability to complete your usual daily activities or if you notice your memory getting worse, talk to your doctor.

6. Manejar condiciones crónicas
Cuanto mejor te cuides, mejor será tu memoria.

Pregnant individuals are more likely to get severely ill and suffer complications from contracting Covid-19. Conditions that increase the risk during pregnancy include body changes, presence of other chronic health conditions, and long-standing systemic health and social disparities that put ethnic groups at higher risk. In order to protect pregnant persons against severe health complications due to Covid-19, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends that pregnant persons be vaccinated and boosted against Covid-19. Currently, there is no evidence of adverse maternal or fetal effects from vaccinating pregnant individuals with the Covid-19 vaccines. Pregnant individuals are encouraged to discuss vaccination with their doctor, however, permission to receive the vaccine is not required.
For lactating persons, breast milk is considered the best source of nutrition for most infants, even to those born to mothers with suspected or confirmed Covid-19. Limited research has shown that antibodies may pass to the newborn through breast milk that may offer the newborn some protection from Covid-19. More research is needed to understand the passing of antibodies and the length of protection offered to the breastfed child. Mothers who are confirmed positive are still encouraged to breastfeed using standard precautions, such as wearing a mask, to reduce the risk of transmission to the baby.
Much is being done to increase awareness about the importance of Covid-19 vaccination during pregnancy and lactation. Visit www.snjpc.org/covid for more information about Covid-19 and pregnancy, or look to these credible sources:

With the spring semester approaching its end for many college students and the beginning of the final semester for many teen and kid students, the excitement for summer break is very tangible. Parents may see this pre-summer angst as a lazy refusal to finish work or lack of effort in the final stretch of the school year. However, for many students this isn’t for a lack of effort, rather it is a time when stress and tension to finish off the school year is at its peak. As a third year undergraduate student, I myself have suffered from what many call academic burnout.
What is academic burnout? Academic burnout is not something students just make up to make parents and teachers feel bad for them. Rather, it happens when their academic work and home life seem overwhelming and difficult to cope with. Many symptoms that come from this include feeling tired, anxious, and like you can't focus on anything. Many students also have exacerbated symptoms due to the occurrence of monthly menstruation.
These symptoms that usually occur during the middle and end of academic year, are most unideal as it fits itself around times of major examinations. In fact, midterm season and finals season are times when academic burnout is recorded the most.
Although for many this time might feel futile, it is important to realize a few things. Firstly, you are not alone. Ever since COVID-19, academic burnout has been going up in prevalence at around 71% in 2021. Secondly, make time for more enjoyable things and activities that occur outside of school. Sometimes when students are going through a lot of academic stress, doing something that is unrelated to school can give a moment of relief. And thirdly, try not to procrastinate. I know this one is most likely the hardest; however, procrastination is like a double-edged sword. Not only can it cause the student to be at risk of missing deadlines, but it also is known to increase stress, anxiety, and worsen academic burnout. It’s important to not set yourself up for failure.
For clarification, even if a student does all these things they can still have academic burnout and that’s okay. The most important thing is to realize that this period of life is temporary. The main goal is to move on and figure out what it was that made it hard and equip yourself with tips and experiences to help yourself in the future.

Chances are you have heard about this leafy green and its many health benefits. Packed with a variety of nutrients, research shows that spinach can potentially help minimize damage to our bodies and protect us from diseases such as obesity and cancer. Taking a look at the nutritional content, we see familiar vitamins and minerals in abundance:
Comparing this list to a daily multivitamin, you may be surprised. Perhaps instead of taking another supplement, we can incorporate this tasty vegetable into our foods on a daily basis. Spinach is incredibly flexible and can add not only nutrition but taste to our cuisine. Here are a few ideas:
Breakfast - Add a handful to eggs in the frying pan or blend into a smoothie along with milk or yogurt, half a banana and 1 cup of berries.
Snack - Heat up 1-2 cups of the leafy green with 1 oz of your favorite protein (tempeh, tofu, chicken, beef, pork) or 2 oz (¼ cup) of beans to hold you over until dinner.
Lunch - Create a salad with spinach leaves as the base. Start with 2-3 cups of raw spinach and add your favorite colorful veggies: red or green bell pepper, tomatoes, cucumbers, radish, carrots, red cabbage or sprouts. Top with some beans and a bit of olive oil and vinegar to round out a heart healthy lunch. Other toppings: 1-2 tbsp raw nuts or seeds, ½ cup farro or brown rice, a sprinkle of feta or Parmesan cheese, 1 handful of sun-dried tomato.
Dinner - Spinach can be added to tomato sauce or soup as it simmers on the stove top. Spinach is simple to saute with a teaspoon of olive oil or can be folded into a casserole during the final mixing process.
We challenge you to get creative and come up with a unique way to add spinach to any of your meals! Please feel free to share your ideas or recipe finds with us so we can spread the word of how we can all incorporate the delicious leafy green into a wholesome lifestyle:

*Note: if you are on a blood thinning medication, be sure to talk with your doctor or dietitian before increasing spinach intake.

About Cherry Hill Free Clinic
Our Vision: An end to healthcare suffering from lack of access to care.
Our Mission: To provide free primary care to the uninsured and underinsured. In the ever-challenging world of healthcare, we often encounter people who suffer debilitating preventable conditions as a result of unmanaged chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma or high blood pressure.
Managing those diseases and providing care means we are making an impact on the quality of people’s lives and hopefully keeping them out of the Emergency Room.
Did you know that 42% of the population lives below the poverty line, with the average income hovering around $26,000? According to the CDC, in Camden County almost 20% are uninsured. That’s 1/5 of your neighbors and friends!
We’re here for those in need, absolutely free.
